College basketball season rolls on and we have a full serving of conference matchups on Tuesday.

The most intriguing matchup is Ohio State traveling to Illinois in a battle of two of the most volatile teams in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes just snapped a five game Big Ten losing streak while Illinois’ heater was stopped with a 15-point loss to Indiana.

I’m looking at the side in a battle of two teams looking for consistency.

Meanwhile, I also have plays on two Big 12 games between Oklahoma and TCU in Fort Worth as well as a rematch between Oklahoma State and Texas.

Here’s three write ups for games I’ve bet, but make sure to check out my betstamp for a few more that I played on Tuesday’s slate:

College basketball record to date

89-70-2, +16.34U

College basketball best bets for Tuesday, January 24th
  • Illinois -3.5 vs. Ohio State
  • Oklahoma +5.5 vs. TCU
  • Oklahoma State vs. Texas UNDER 136.5
Illinois vs. Ohio State prediction and pick

We’ll see Zed Key’s availability for this one after he had an awkward landing at the end of the Buckeyes win against Iowa, limping off the floor, but if he’s not 100% that’s a problem against a sound Illinois offense.

The Illini are strong inside, shooting over 50% on two-point tries and the 33rd highest field goal percentage at the rim. Coleman Hawkins is a versatile big man and the Illini have a bruiser down low with Dain Dainja, so this can be a problem for the OSU defense if Key, the team’s only reliable big man, is banged up.

Meanwhile, the Illinois defense does a fantastic job of shutting down the perimeter, the most efficient form of the OSU offense. The Buckeyes shoot over 40% as a team from deep, but Illinois allows the 15th lowest 3-point rate in the country. However, Ohio State is shooting 44% from two-point range in Big Ten games.

No, they won’t shoot that bad the rest of league play, but this is an Illinois defense that can shut off the best form of the Ohio State offense, who also may be down their best big man.

I like Illinois, who has a rest advantage, to get back on track at home.

PICK: Illinois -3.5

Oklahoma vs. TCU prediction and pick

TCU loves to push the ball in transition, but Oklahoma is an elite transition defense, top 20 in transition rate allowed according to Hoop-Math, so this game can be played in the half court, which fits OU’s style.

While that’s not TCU’s point of attack typically, they have the shortest offensive possession length in Big 12 play per KenPom, they should be able to get going at the rim, where they possess the second highest rim rate in the country. Oklahoma won’t turn you over (last in Big 12 turnover rate), but they do have a compact defense that is elite at the rim.

TCU is fresh off one of the most impressive shot making performances of the year against Kansas on the road, so maybe there is some regression coming there way against an OU team that has been competitive all season with their efficient shot making, the best two-point offense in Big 12 play at 55.5%.

The Sooners are 2-5 in Big 12 play, but four of those losses have come by four or less. The team’s methodical tempo mixed with shot making has made them a good underdog bet at over a few buckets all season.

This is also good sell high spot on TCU as well following their win at Allen Fieldhouse over the weekend.

PICK: Oklahoma +5.5

Oklahoma State vs. Texas prediction and pick

The first meeting between the two had a total of 139.5 and finished with a 56-46 Longhorns road victory.

That was early in Big 12 play and we have a few more data points on each team to go off of and the Pokes offense is as bad as advertised. The team is bottom half of the conference in most offensive metrics, including effective field goal percentage (last) and turnover rate (third to last).

However, Mike Boynton’s group stresses defense, where they rank second in KenPom’s adjusted defensive efficiency by shutting off the rim for opponents. The team is fifth in field goal percentage allowed at the rim and also top 10 at defending in the three-point shot.

Texas is a middling 3-point shooting team that will struggle to find quality looks against this Oklahoma State defense that has allowed more than 70 points in conference play once this season.

If Texas tries to push the pace, expect the Cowboys strong transition defense to show out, the team has allowed a bottom 40 rate of transition opportunities to opponents and are 28th in effective field goal percentage on transition plays, per Hoop-Math.

Give me the under in what should be another slug fest.

PICK: Under 136.5

Game odds refresh periodically and are subject to change.

Karren Brady’s career advice on going back to college to become a teacher

APPRENTICE star and West Ham United vice-chair Karren Brady answers your careers questions and meets an inspirational CEO.

Here she gives a reader advice on how to feel go back to college and retrain as a teacher.

1Karren Brady, Baroness Brady, CBE is a British business executive and television personality

Q) I’m in my 50s and I work in an admin role for my local council.

I’ve been planning for a while to go back to college to study classical literature – one of my passions – as a mature student, with the intention of teaching the subject in the future.

Then the pandemic hit and forced me to delay my plans. And now the cost of living crisis seems to have scuppered my dream completely – there’s no way we’d be able to get by on just my husband’s income alone.

Do you think it’s time for me to give up on the idea of teaching and keep reading as a hobby?

Sheila, via email

A) I admire your ambition to keep learning and to change careers.

Doing something you’re passionate about is important, and yet it does seem to be a luxury when there’s so much worry about the cost of living.

I absolutely do not think you should give up on the idea of teaching – after all, a good teacher is one of the most important people a child (or adult) can have in their life.

So you need to consider how you can make it happen without hugely reducing your finances and quality of life.

Can you study as a part-time student perhaps? It’ll take longer, but will enable you to earn while you study.

Universities and colleges offer scholarships or bursaries and there is help available to fund an Access to Higher Education course, where the loan can be written off once you complete a subsequent qualification.

Seek as much advice as you can before making any decisions. Good luck!

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF....

Desriee Asomuyide, 30, is the founder of inclusive educational toy company Little Omo. She lives in east London with her son Isaiah, three.

I wake up at…

6.30am. After showering and getting ready, I wake Isaiah up at 7.30am and drop him off at nursery, so that I’m at my home desk at 9am.

A normal day involves…

Checking my content planner to assess the day’s tasks, then I’m on email, liaising with stockists at Disneyland and Selfridges.

I started Little Omo – which means “little child” in the West African Yoruba language – in September 2020, a year after being made redundant from my job as a fashion stylist.

I came up with the idea when I was given flashcards at my baby shower and all the characters in the pack were white.

After touching base via Zoom with Mariie, my London-based virtual assistant, I meet with suppliers who produce our puzzles and flashcards.

We launch new products every 3-6 months, which I illustrate, plus I edit photography and create Instagram reels.

After eating a sausage and bacon baguette with salad around 10am, I head out for a 45-minute walk to a local park, where I do my business calls, including speaking to our freelance PR manager Maxine.

Being outside helps my creativity. I’m constantly planning how to grow the brand and social media is brilliant for spreading the word – it’s how Disneyland found us!

I clock off at 5pm, and once I’ve collected Isaiah, I don’t touch my phone. He’ll only be young once, so we play cars or watch TV.

He loves helping me cook his favourite dinner – plantain, chicken and rice.

The best part of my job is…

Creating inclusive educational products for the current and next generation of black and brown children.

Seeing themselves in the products they are learning from builds confidence.

And the worst…

Working on my own can get lonely and it’s sometimes tempting to clean the house or get distracted by the TV.

I don’t have a partner and there’s a lot of pressure being a single parent, but I have help from my family and friends.

I wind down by…

Once Isaiah’s in bed at 7.30pm, I light a candle, listen to some meditation music, then watch Netflix before bedtime at 10pm.
